Automodello announces 1:43 and 1:24 versions of Ford's first ever Pony car
SURE TO BE applauded by serious American car collectors everywhere is the announcement by Automodello™ that it will be releasing three Ford Officially Licensed editions of the 1962 Mustang I Concept this autumn. Mustang I was a small, mid-engined (4-cylinder), open two-seater with aluminium bodywork. The idea behind this design exercise was to create a compact sports roadster that would challenge both the Corvette and the increasingly popular British competitors of the day. The prototype, however, was deemed too extreme for the mass market and, after the initial two were made, was mothballed. It shared few design elements with the first production Mustang that rolled of the production line two years later, but it can lay claim to being Ford’s first ever pony car.
Automodello™ will be modelling the second ‘race’ prototype of Mustang I, as it made its formal debut at Watkins Glen during the United States Grand Prix on October 7, 1962. With Dan Gurney at the wheel demonstrating its capabilities, the car proved blisteringly quick, recording lap times just shy of the pace set by the Formula 1 racecars competing that year.
This will be the first scale cross-over by Automodello™, with both 1:43 and 1:24 versions offered. 1:43 collectors will be able to opt for either the $119.95 (approx. £79.50) Standard Edition model (up to 999 pieces) or the far more exclusive Tribute Edition. The Tribute Edition will be limited to just 50 pieces, all carrying certificates hand-signed Dan Gurney himself, and will be priced at $195 (approx. £129)
The larger 1:24 Mustang I Concept, costing $350 (approx. £231.70), will be limited to 150 certificated and Dan Gurney signed examples. Packaging for these models will feature the official Ford Mustang 50 Years (1964-2014) logo.
The 1:43 Standard Edition models will go on general release through all the usual Automodello™ outlets, while the special Dan Gurney signed editions in 1:43 and 1:24 will be available only through Diecasm and the Henry Ford Museum. Pre-orders are now being taken.
