50 Years – Gerry Anderson’s Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons

Prepare for a trip to the future (2068) via a blast from the past (1967), as we showcase some of the classic toys and contemporary collectables inspired by Century 21 Productions' now iconic British childrens' television series...

In September, 1967 the first ever broadcast of Captain Scarlet & the Mysterons burst onto our screens. While all the characters were presented as marionette puppets set against a backdrop of scale model sets and special effects, it was somewhat darker than the previous children’s television series from Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s Century 21 Productions company, such as Thunderbirds, Joe 90, etc. Set in 2068, the plots saw Captain Scarlet and fellow members of Spectrum (the worldwide security organisation) locked into deadly conflict with a race of Martians known as the Mysterons. Each episode opened with the narrative: “The Mysterons, sworn enemies of Earth, possessing the ability to recreate an exact likeness of an object or person... but first they must destroy. Leading the fight, one man fate has made indestructible. His name... Captain Scarlet”. The story behind Captain Scarlet’s unique power was revealed in the pilot episode, when he acquired Mysteron retrometabolism – and, if you’re already familiar with the show, at this point we defy you not to be singing or humming along to the theme tune!

This brilliant British TV series not only saw reruns in the UK but captivated audiences in more than 40 other countries around the globe. It also, of course, inspired some wonderful toys and collectables.
